Man and Van vs Removal Company in Teesside, Which Should You Choose?

When you are moving, you have a genuine choice to make: book a man with a van, or book a full removal company. The right answer depends almost entirely on the size of your move and how much of it you are willing to do yourself. Here is a straight comparison, including the point at which we would tell you to book the removal firm instead of us.

The Difference in One Paragraph

A man and van is one person and one van. You get the vehicle, the driving, and someone to load and unload with you. A removal company is a crew, usually two to four people, with a larger vehicle, and often optional packing, dismantling and insurance packages. One is a service you take part in. The other is a service that happens around you.

Cost

This is the headline difference and it is a large one. A man and van across Teesside typically costs between £50 and £200 depending on volume and distance. Our own pricing is a £50 minimum, then £2 per mile beyond the first five miles.

A full removal company with a crew and a larger vehicle will normally quote several hundred pounds for a house move. That is not a rip off, it is what three or four wages, a bigger vehicle and full insurance actually cost. The question is not which is cheaper, because the answer is obvious. The question is whether you need what the extra money buys.

What the Extra Money Buys

• Speed. Four people load a house in a fraction of the time one person does. On a completion day with a tight window, that matters enormously.
• Everything in one trip. A large vehicle may take a whole three bedroom house in one load. A van will not.
• Packing. Most removal firms will pack for you as an optional extra. Nobody enjoys packing, and for some moves it is money well spent.
• Dismantling and reassembly. Beds, wardrobes, sometimes kitchens.
• Comprehensive insurance. Worth checking the detail of, but the cover is normally broader.
• You do nothing. For an elderly relative's move, or a move happening while you are at work, that has real value.

What a Man and Van Buys

• Cost. Often a quarter or less of the price.
• Flexibility. Short notice bookings are much easier. Removal firms are often booked weeks ahead at month end.
• Proportion. Sending three people and a Luton to move a studio flat is not thoroughness, it is waste, and you pay for it.
• One point of contact. You speak to the person who turns up.
• Small jobs are welcome. Many removal firms have a minimum job size that makes single item work uneconomic. It is our normal work.

Where the Line Sits

In practice, the crossover point for most people is somewhere around a two bedroom house.

Book a man and van if: you are moving a single item, a room, a studio, a one bedroom flat, a student let, or a two bedroom property where you have packed yourself and you are not desperately tight on time. Also if you are moving into or out of storage, doing a part move, or collecting furniture.

Book a removal company if: you are moving a three bedroom house or larger, everything must happen inside a completion day window, you need a packing service, you cannot be there, or you are moving a long distance with a full household.

Either could work if: you are moving a two bedroom house. Get both quotes. The difference is often big enough that spending a weekend decluttering first and going with a van is the better deal.

The Middle Option People Forget

You do not have to choose one for the whole move. A common and sensible pattern is to move the bulk yourself over a week or two using a man and van for the awkward heavy items, and only book help for the day itself if you need it. Sofas, beds, white goods and wardrobes are the things that genuinely need a van and a second pair of hands. Boxes fit in a car boot.

Moving the heavy items in advance also takes an enormous amount of pressure off completion day, which is worth more than the money it saves.

Questions to Ask Whichever You Choose

• Is that a fixed price or an estimate? An estimate that moves on the day is not a quote.
• What is the insurance position, exactly? Ask what is covered and what the excess is. Do not assume.
• What happens if the chain delays completion? Get the answer in writing before the day.
• Who is actually turning up? Some larger firms subcontract. Worth knowing.
• Do you want photos? Anyone quoting a furniture job without seeing it is guessing, and a guess can be revised on the day.

Being Honest About It
