Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree have made buying second hand furniture genuinely easy, right up until the moment you have to collect it. Teesside has a very active local marketplace scene, and "collection only" is the phrase that stands between a lot of people and a bargain. This guide covers how to buy well, how collection actually works, and how to avoid the mistakes that turn a good deal into a wasted afternoon.

Why Collection Only Exists

Sellers list items as collection only because delivering furniture is a job in itself. It is not obstructiveness. But it does mean the practical burden of the purchase falls on you, and that is where a lot of good deals fall apart: the sofa is £40, and the person selling it lives on the third floor in a different town.

The upside is that collection only listings are consistently cheaper than delivered ones, and they stay listed longer, because most buyers are filtering them out. If you can solve the collection problem, you are shopping in a smaller market.

How a Pickup Works

You buy the item and agree a collection time with the seller. We turn up, load it, and deliver it to you. You do not need to be there for the collection, only for the drop off, which is usually the point of the whole exercise.

What we need from you: the seller's address and postcode, a contact number for them, your delivery address, and a photo of the item. What we need from the seller is only that they know roughly when we are coming and that someone is in.

Send the Listing Photo, Always

This is the single thing that determines whether the quote you get is the price you pay.

Furniture descriptions are unreliable through nobody's fault. A "small sofa", a "two seater", a "compact settee" and a "loveseat" can all mean the same thing or four different things. A "chest of drawers" might be waist height or shoulder height. We have turned up to collect a "small wardrobe" that was a nine foot fitted unit.

A screenshot of the seller's listing photo takes you fifteen seconds and removes all of that. For that reason we ask for a photo on single item and delivery jobs before we quote. It is not bureaucracy, it is what lets us give you a fixed price instead of an estimate with room in it.

Questions to Ask the Seller Before You Buy

Ask these in the message thread, before money changes hands. Sellers are almost always happy to answer, and the answers change whether the deal is worth doing.

• What floor is it on, and is there a lift? A third floor walk up changes the job completely.
• What are the actual dimensions? Height, width and depth. If they will not measure it, that tells you something.
• Is it dismantled, or does it come apart? Beds and wardrobes often will not clear a staircase assembled.
• Can we park outside? Permit zones and narrow terraces add carrying distance.
• Is it definitely still available? Marketplace listings go stale, and a wasted collection is a wasted booking.
• Will you be in, and for how long? Agree a window rather than a single minute.

Measure Your Own Doorway Too

The most common way a marketplace purchase goes wrong is not the collection, it is the delivery. The item leaves the seller's house perfectly well and then will not go into yours.

Before you commit, measure your front door, your hallway, the turn at the bottom of the stairs, and the door of the room it is going in. The tightest point is almost always the stair turn. If a corner sofa is going upstairs, be honest with yourself about whether it will make the bend, because the alternative is a sofa living in your hall.

Cost

Our minimum is £50, then £2 per mile beyond the first five miles. Because Teesside is compact, most marketplace pickups are single load, short distance jobs that land at or very near the minimum. Middlesbrough to Stockton is about four miles. Stockton to Yarm is about six. Even a run out to Darlington adds well under £30.

Worth doing the arithmetic before you buy: a £30 sofa that needs a £50 collection is a £80 sofa. Sometimes that is still an excellent deal, and sometimes the one listed twenty minutes closer is the better buy. Knowing the collection cost up front lets you make that call properly, which is why we give you a price rather than a callback.

Combining Pickups

If you are furnishing a flat and buying several items, try to time them together. Two collections in one area on one run is much better value than two separate bookings, and it is very common when someone is kitting out a first place. Staying Safe

Standard marketplace advice applies and is worth repeating:

• Pay on collection or through the platform's own protected checkout, not by bank transfer to a stranger in advance.
• Be wary of a listing priced far below everything comparable, particularly if the seller wants to move the conversation off the platform.
• Check the item is what was described before paying. If we are collecting on your behalf, tell us what to look for and we will flag anything obviously wrong before we load it.
• Keep the message thread. It is your record if something is not as described.

Selling Rather Than Buying

The same works in reverse. If you have sold something bulky and the buyer cannot collect, offering delivery for a fixed cost often closes a sale that would otherwise stall, and it widens your pool of buyers considerably. Plenty of our marketplace work is booked by the seller rather than the buyer.
