What Counts as a Furniture Transfer

Anything from one item to a room's worth, moved from A to B:

• Furniture bought privately or through a marketplace listing

• Furniture moved between floors or rooms within the same property

The older houses along and off the main road often have generous rooms and awkward approaches: long driveways, gravel, mature hedging, and front doors that are further from the road than they look. The newer estates are the reverse, with easy parking but tighter internal turns and narrower hallways.

Neither is a problem, but they are different jobs, and knowing which one we are coming to lets us plan properly. When you book, a sentence about the property and where a van can stop is worth more than a paragraph about the furniture.

The Measurement That Actually Matters

Most furniture problems come down to one measurement, and it is not the one people take.

Everyone measures the doorway. Doorways are rarely the issue. The tightest point on almost any route is the turn at the bottom or top of a staircase, and what matters there is the diagonal of the item rather than its width.

Before you commit to moving something large upstairs, measure:

• The item, including the diagonal across its largest face
• The front door, and whether it opens fully or fouls on something
• The hallway width
• The stair turn, at the narrowest point, including any handrail
• The destination room door

Five minutes of this prevents the situation nobody wants, which is a sofa wedged on a landing.

Things That Come Apart, and Things That Do Not

A lot of furniture is more dismantleable than it looks:

• Sofa feet usually unscrew, and it is often enough to make the difference.
• Sofa backs detach on many modern designs. People own them for years without realising.
• Bed frames almost always come apart, and should.
• Flat pack wardrobes come apart, though older chipboard ones do not always survive it. Solid wood is more forgiving.
• Table legs unbolt on most dining tables.

What genuinely does not come apart is a corner sofa built as one piece, a solid wood wardrobe made before flat pack existed, and most upright pianos. Those need measuring honestly rather than optimistically.

What It Costs

Furniture descriptions are unreliable, genuinely through nobody's fault. A "small sofa", a "two seater" and a "compact settee" can mean the same thing or three different things. Protecting the Item

Everything travels with blankets and straps and is secured properly rather than stacked and hoped for. A few things help from your end:

• Empty it. Drawers and wardrobes are lighter, safer and far less likely to be damaged empty.
• Remove glass shelves and table tops. These travel separately and flat.
• Point out anything fragile first. Mirrors, veneers, anything with sentimental value gets a slower pair of hands.
• Clear the route. Move the things in the hallway that will otherwise be moved twice.

The Old Item

New furniture usually replaces something. If it is in decent condition, it is worth selling or giving away locally instead. Teesside has a very active marketplace scene and good furniture moves quickly.
