Flat pack furniture has an obvious problem: the boxes are much bigger and much heavier than the finished item looks like it should be. A wardrobe that fits neatly in a bedroom corner arrives as three boxes, one of which is nearly two metres long and needs two people to lift. This guide covers getting retail and flat pack furniture home across Teesside without wedging it into a car that was never going to take it.

Why It Rarely Fits in the Car

People underestimate this constantly, and the shops do not help by displaying finished products rather than boxes. A few realities:

• A large wardrobe panel is often longer than the interior of a hatchback with the seats down.
• Flat pack is dense. Chipboard and MDF are heavy, and a single wardrobe box can be a serious lift for one person.
• Boxes do not bend. A sofa can be angled through a doorway. A rigid two metre box cannot.
• Driving with the boot open and a load overhanging is not just risky, it can be an offence if the load is insecure or inadequately marked.

The usual outcome is either two trips, a damaged car interior, or a scratched box on the pavement outside the shop.

What a Van Run Actually Involves

You buy the items, we collect them and deliver them to your door. You do not need to be at the shop when we collect if the order is paid for and ready, though you do need to have arranged that with the retailer beforehand and given us whatever reference they need.

The common versions of this job are:

• You shop, we collect. You choose in store, pay, and we pick up later that day or the next.
• We come with you. Useful if you are not sure what you are buying yet, or if you want the option to change your mind about sizes.
• Click and collect run. You order online, we collect from the collection point and bring it to you.
• Retail park sweep. Several shops in one trip, which is common at Teesside Park.

Local Retail Parks and Longer Runs

Measure Three Things Before You Buy

This is the advice that saves the most money and the most disappointment, and almost nobody follows it.

1. The finished item. Obvious, and where everyone stops.
2. The box dimensions. Usually listed on the product page under packaging or delivery. This is what has to get through your door, not the assembled piece.
3. The route in. Front door, hallway, the turn at the bottom of the stairs, the turn at the top, and the bedroom door. The tightest point wins, and it is nearly always the stair turn rather than the doorway.

A tape measure and five minutes beats a return trip and a restocking discussion.

Assembly, and Being Straight About It

We deliver flat pack, we do not assemble it. Getting the boxes into the right room is the part that needs a van and a second pair of hands. The building is a job for you, an evening and the right screwdriver.

Two things that make the assembly go better. Ask us to put the boxes in the room where the item is going rather than the hallway, because moving a built wardrobe between rooms is much harder than moving the boxes. And open the boxes in that room too, since flat pack packaging generates a startling volume of cardboard and polystyrene.

What to Do With the Packaging

A large flat pack order can produce more cardboard than a fortnight of normal recycling will take. Break it down flat as you go rather than at the end, when it has spread across the floor. That matters, because fly tipped waste is traced back to whoever originally owned it.

The Old Furniture Problem

New furniture usually replaces something. Deciding what happens to the old item before delivery day is worth doing, because otherwise it ends up in the garage for a year.

If it is in decent condition, selling or giving it away locally is straightforward and Teesside has a very active marketplace scene. If it is not, we can take it away on the same visit, which saves a second booking. Just mention it when you book so we know to leave space in the van.
