Student Moves in Middlesbrough and Teesside

Every September students move into Middlesbrough in the space of about a fortnight, and Teesside teenagers head off to universities everywhere else. Both are the same problem: more stuff than fits in a car, a fixed arrival day, and a building you have never seen before. This guide covers both directions, what a van is genuinely useful for, and, just as usefully, when you do not need one.

Moving Into Teesside University Halls

Teesside University's own accommodation is all close to the Middlesbrough campus: Cornell Quarter, King Edward's Square, Parkside Halls, West Parkside Village, East Parkside Village and Woodlands. We cover all of them, and the private student blocks and shared houses around the town centre and Linthorpe Road.

First, the honest bit: what you do not need to bring

University rooms come furnished. Teesside's accommodation team lists a single bed, wardrobe, set of drawers, desk and study chair as the minimum in every study bedroom, and says not to bring additional furniture. Cooking appliances such as microwaves are not allowed in rooms either. Bedding is the big exception: it is not provided, so you bring your own.

What that means in practice is that a first year moving into halls is moving clothes, bedding, kitchen bits, a computer and the contents of a teenage bedroom, not furniture. If that fits in the family car, take the family car. We would rather tell you that than sell you a van you do not need.

When a van does make sense for halls

• You are arriving by train or plane. Plenty of students, international students especially, arrive with several large cases and no car at all. We collect from Middlesbrough or Darlington station or from Teesside International Airport and take you and your luggage to the door of your hall. There is room for a passenger or two up front, so you travel with your things.
• The car is full before you have packed the bike. Bikes, musical instruments, a gaming setup, a drum kit, sports kit. One awkward item is often the thing that breaks the car plan.
• Several of you are coming from the same town. Three students from the same sixth form splitting one van is cheaper per head than three cars' worth of fuel and parking, and only one set of parents loses a day.
• Nobody at home drives, or nobody can get the day off. It happens more than you would think, and it is a completely normal booking.

Second and Third Years: Student Houses

This is where a van really earns its keep. Once you leave halls for a shared house, you start owning things: a desk you like, a proper chair, a mattress, a TV, a bike, kitchen equipment for five people, and whatever the last tenants left behind. Student houses are usually only part furnished, and the gap between what the landlord provides and what you need gets filled from Facebook Marketplace.

That makes two jobs worth knowing about in September. One is moving a house share's worth of belongings from one student house to another, often just a few streets apart. The other is collecting a Marketplace desk, bed or sofa that is listed as collection only and will not go in anybody's car. The summer gap

University contracts and private tenancies rarely line up. Teesside's standard halls contract is 40 weeks, and in 2025/26 it ran from 14 September to 21 June, with 45 and 50 week options. Private tenancies often end around the end of June, and the next one may not start until September. If you are not going home for the summer, or home is a flight away, that is two months where your belongings need to be somewhere.

The usual answer is a small self storage unit shared between housemates. A 25 square foot unit holds a surprising amount when it is boxes and bags rather than furniture. We do the run from the house to the unit in June and back out again in September. If you are planning that, confirm the storage site's access hours before you book the van, because turning up to a locked gate is the most common way a storage move goes wrong.

Going Away to University From Teesside

The other half of September is Teesside families delivering a student to a university somewhere else. The car works for a first year going into furnished halls. It stops working for a second year moving into a house with a bed frame, a desk and a bike, and it never worked for anyone whose family car is a small hatchback.

These are real distances from Middlesbrough to each campus, worked out the same way our quote tool works them out, with the guide price for a single van load. The formula is the same for everyone: £50 minimum covering the first five miles, then £2 a mile.

For a long run like these we confirm a fixed price for the whole trip before you book, so the number you agree is the number you pay whatever the A19 or the A1 is doing that morning. Two or three students heading to the same city can share a load, which changes the sums completely.

Move In Day, Wherever It Is

Universities handle arrivals differently, but a few things are true almost everywhere, so check your arrival email for the details that apply to you.

• You will probably have an arrival slot. Hundreds of cars cannot all unload at once, so most universities allocate a day and a time window. Tell us the slot when you book and we will plan the run around it rather than the other way round.
• Collect your key before you unload. Find out where key collection is. It is often not at the hall itself, and queueing for a key with a loaded van on a time limited bay is avoidable.
• Know your block, flat and floor. Rooms in halls are usually up stairs or a shared lift, and on arrivals day the lift has a queue. Knowing the floor lets us bring the right kit and allow the right time.
• Unloading bays are usually short stay. Pack so everything can come off the van quickly: boxes and bags, nothing loose.

Packing for a Student Move

• Bags for soft things, boxes for the rest. Bedding, clothes and towels go in strong bags and double as padding. Everything else goes in boxes small enough to carry up three flights.
• Label with your name, block and room number. On arrivals day a lot of identical boxes are moving through the same corridors.
• Keep one bag with you. Documents, ID, your accommodation paperwork, laptop, chargers, medication. It stays with you, never in the load.
• Bring your own bedding. It is the one thing almost every hall expects you to supply, and the one thing people forget.
• Leave the furniture. Halls do not want it, and most will ask you to take it away again.

June, and Moving Out Again

The whole thing runs in reverse at the end of the year, and it is far more compressed. Late June is the busiest week of the year for student moves in Middlesbrough, because everybody's contract ends within days of everybody else's. If you already know you will need a van in June, book it in May. If several of you are leaving the same building on the same day, one booking covering all the rooms is much better value than separate ones.

What It Costs, and How to Book

The minimum is £50, which covers the first five miles, then £2 a mile. A move between two student houses in Middlesbrough, a Marketplace collection across town, or a run from the station to your hall are all inside that minimum. Stockton to the Teesside campus is about four miles. Yarm is about nine, Redcar and Hartlepool about ten or eleven, and Darlington about eighteen.
